Birthday in Porto: Heatwaves, Wine and Why I Loved It

Crowne Plaza Porto

Melanie Warren on 01 jul 2026

Porto is one of those cities that gets under your skin quickly. I spent my birthday there this year with my husband, right in the middle of a heatwave, and it was everything I hoped for and more: beautiful river views, seriously good food and wine, and a day in the Douro Valley that completely made the trip. Here is how we spent four nights in Porto and why I think it is a brilliant choice for a couples’ escape

Birthday Bliss in Porto and the Douro Valley

This year I celebrated my birthday in Porto with my husband, and it was utterly amazing: even a full-on Portuguese heatwave could not take the shine off this trip. I had gone with high hopes for Porto, but the city still managed to exceed every expectation. It was one of those breaks that stays with you long after you get home.

Crowne Plaza Porto: our base

We stayed for four nights at the Crowne Plaza Porto and arrived to find we had been upgraded: one of those lovely little perks that can come with booking through me. The hotel is in the financial district, which turned out to be a fantastic base. It is not right in the old town, but that became part of the charm. If you're happy with a good 40 minute walk into the centre, some of it uphill, it's a great choice. The stroll in each morning felt like easing into the day, watching the city slowly shift from business district to historic heart. In the late afternoon heat, however, we were very happy to catch an Uber back. Rides never cost more than a few pounds, and when the pavements are sizzling it is money well spent.

First impressions of Porto

Porto is seriously photogenic. Faded tiles, balconies draped with plants, steep streets that suddenly open up to river views: it feels both magical and lived-in at the same time. One of the city’s real icons is the Dom Luís I Bridge, and walking across the upper level is a must. From up there you get some of the best views of Porto’s terracotta rooftops, the Douro River and the wine lodges over in Vila Nova de Gaia. Go around golden hour if you can, when the light softens and the whole riverside seems to glow.

Down below, the Ribeira waterfront is where Porto really shows off. Colourful buildings crowd together along the water, cafés and wine bars spill out onto cobbles, and there is a constant buzz of boats, buskers and locals just getting on with their day. It is the perfect place to stroll, grab a drink, or simply sit and watch the world go by.

You can really see why people connect the city to Harry Potter here too. J. K. Rowling lived in Porto for a while and there are streets that look as though they have come straight out of Diagon Alley. The famous Livraria Lello bookshop leans into that completely: it is incredibly popular, but if you are a book lover it is one of those places you tick off at least once. Top Tip; Prebook tickets and go early, it gets busy and crowded and very warm!

Step back from the river and you find a more boho side to Porto in its markets and back streets. Expect stalls with handmade jewellery, vintage pieces, art prints and local crafts, often set against the backdrop of yet another beautiful tiled facade. Even if you are not a big shopper, they are great for soaking up the atmosphere and picking up a souvenir.

Long lunches, tapas and Portuguese wine

The food in Porto was a highlight all of its own. There is something incredibly indulgent about lingering over plates of tapas in the afternoon heat, a glass of Portuguese wine in hand, and nowhere in particular to be. The city does casual dining very well, with plenty of pavement tables where you can sit back, people watch and slowly work your way through small plates.

In the evenings we leaned into the city’s love of steak, and I can honestly say some of the steak houses here are to die for. Combine that with a good Douro wine and you are in serious foodie heaven.

The Douro Valley: the day that made the trip

As much as I enjoyed Porto itself, the day that defined the whole trip was our full-day tour of the Douro Valley.

The drive out of the city slowly opens up into steep, terraced hillsides and neat rows of vines. Our tour included visits to two vineyards, each framed by those sweeping valley views. It is the sort of scenery that makes you pause and just take it in.

At the first winery we sat down to a long lunch in a beautiful courtyard, shaded from the sun, with a very tempting pool glimmering nearby. It was unhurried and relaxed: good food, local wine and the gentle background noise of everyone enjoying themselves.

There was plenty of tasting throughout the day, and we finished with a boat trip along the Douro River. Gliding along the water with the vineyards rising on either side, warm air on your skin and a glass in hand feels quietly luxurious.

We did not leave empty-handed. A bottle of caramel port came home with us, ready to open on a cold evening when we want to be back there for an hour or two

Why Porto works so well for a couples’ escape

Porto is not polished within an inch of its life, and that is exactly why it works. It is full of character, viewpoints, unexpected corners and streets that feel made for wandering hand in hand.

Think golden evenings by the river, tiled churches catching the last of the light, excellent food and wine, and the option to slip away into the Douro Valley for a day that feels wonderfully indulgent.

For me, that Douro day is what lifted the trip from “great city break” to “I would happily do that again”. If you enjoy wine, dramatic scenery and slow, grown-up days with someone you love, Porto makes a very easy yes.

If this sounds like your kind of break and you would like something similar for your own birthday, anniversary or just-because escape, I can help put it together: from choosing the right hotel and neighbourhood to arranging vineyard tours and transfers, so all you need to do is turn up.

Get in touch if you would like to start planning your own Porto and Douro Valley getaway.
