Five Spooky Places in America That Belong on Your Bucket List

Donna Gilbert on 29 Oct 2026

From witch trials and ghostly hotel guests to Southern cities with seriously creepy reputations, America has a darker side that’s just waiting to be explored. And no, you don’t have to believe in ghosts to enjoy it. There are holidays where you return home with a suntan, a suitcase full of washing and approximately 400 photographs of the same swimming pool. Then there are holidays where you return with incredible stories, a newfound appreciation for daylight and a nagging suspicion that you weren’t alone in your hotel room. Welcome to the spooky side of the USA.

America is brilliant at doing things on a grand scale, and Halloween is no exception. But beyond the pumpkins, haunted houses and people dressed as things that would give your nan a heart attack, there are real places steeped in history, folklore and tales of unexplained happenings.

Whether you fancy wandering through a town famous for witchcraft, spending the night in a legendary hotel or joining a ghost tour through atmospheric Southern streets, these five destinations offer something a little different.

And the best bit? You can mix the creepy stuff with fabulous food, spectacular scenery, historic cities and a proper American road trip. Just don't blame me if you end up sleeping with the light on.

1. Salem, Massachusetts: Witches, Warnings and a Whole Lot of History

If Halloween had a spiritual home, Salem would be a pretty strong contender.

This Massachusetts coastal town is forever associated with the infamous witch trials of 1692, when accusations of witchcraft led to 19 people being hanged. It's a disturbing chapter of American history, and one that still fascinates visitors more than three centuries later. Today, Salem embraces its past with museums, historic landmarks, walking tours and Halloween celebrations that transform the town every October.

You can delve into the real events behind the trials, explore the stories that have grown around them and discover how history and legend have become intertwined. Just don't expect a pointy hat and a broomstick to be compulsory attire.

Why visit?

October is when Salem really comes alive, with seasonal events, themed attractions and a wonderfully eerie atmosphere. It's also a charming coastal town with independent shops, historic buildings and maritime heritage, so there's plenty to enjoy if your interest in witchcraft extends only as far as the odd episode of Bewitched.

Make it a bigger adventure: Combine Salem with Boston and explore more of New England, where charming towns, autumn colours, coastal scenery and historic inns make a fantastic backdrop for a multi-stop American escape. My advice? Allow enough time to explore beyond the Halloween attractions. There's far more to Salem than a souvenir shop selling witch-shaped fridge magnets.

2. The Stanley Hotel, Colorado: Check In If You Dare

Fancy a mountain escape with a side order of psychological horror?

Perched in Estes Park, Colorado, the grand Stanley Hotel is famous for inspiring Stephen King's bestselling novel The Shining. King stayed at the property in 1974, and its distinctive atmosphere helped spark the idea for his chilling tale. So, naturally, it's become a magnet for visitors intrigued by its history, reported paranormal activity and ghostly legends.

The hotel offers opportunities to explore its fascinating past, with tours that delve into its architecture, stories and supernatural reputation. Whether you leave convinced you've encountered something otherworldly or simply impressed by the building, it's certainly not your average overnight stay. And here's the beauty of it: you don't have to spend the entire trip investigating suspicious noises.

Estes Park sits on the doorstep of Rocky Mountain National Park, where dramatic peaks, forests, wildlife and spectacular mountain scenery provide an entirely different kind of thrill.

Why visit?

This is one for travellers who love a little mystery but also want fresh mountain air, outdoor adventures and jaw-dropping landscapes. Spend your days exploring the Rockies, then return to a historic hotel with a reputation that might make you think twice about asking for a late-night wake-up call.

Make it a bigger adventure: Build a Colorado road trip around Denver, Estes Park and the Rockies, with scenic drives and mountain towns along the way. One small suggestion: if you hear someone wandering the corridor at 3am, perhaps check the time before deciding it's a ghost. It could just be another guest who has overdone the hotel bar.

3. Gettysburg, Pennsylvania: Where History Takes a Chilling Turn

Some destinations are fascinating because of their scenery. Others because of their food. Gettysburg offers something much more thought-provoking.

In July 1863, this Pennsylvania town became the setting for one of the most significant battles of the American Civil War. The fighting lasted three days and resulted in devastating loss of life, making Gettysburg a place of enormous historical importance. Today, Gettysburg National Military Park preserves the battlefields, monuments and memorials that tell the story of those events. Visiting gives you the chance to understand the people, decisions and sacrifices behind a defining moment in American history.

But Gettysburg also has a reputation for ghost stories. Over the years, visitors and locals have shared accounts of unexplained sounds, mysterious figures and strange experiences around the battlefield and historic buildings. Evening ghost tours bring these tales to life, adding another layer to an already atmospheric destination. Whether you're a committed paranormal enthusiast or someone who normally needs convincing that the house is haunted, it's an intriguing place to explore after dark.

Why visit?

Gettysburg combines important American history with atmospheric sightseeing and a wealth of stories. It's a destination where the past feels remarkably close, and where guided tours can offer a much deeper understanding of the events that shaped the country.

Make it a bigger adventure: Include Gettysburg on an East Coast itinerary linking Washington, DC, Philadelphia and other historic destinations. You could combine big-city sightseeing with smaller towns, countryside and some seriously interesting American history. It's educational, thought-provoking and just a little eerie. A history lesson, essentially, but one that might make you reconsider that midnight walk.

4. New Orleans, Louisiana: Jazz, Jambalaya and a Few Uninvited Guests

If you like your spooky experiences with a generous helping of personality, New Orleans deserves a place on your list.

This Louisiana city is famous for its jazz, Creole cuisine, colourful celebrations and wonderfully distinctive culture. But behind the music and lively streets lies a fascinating world of legends, ghost stories and supernatural folklore. Start in the French Quarter, where historic buildings, ornate iron balconies and atmospheric streets provide the perfect setting for an evening walking tour. Local guides share tales of mysterious characters, reported hauntings and the events that have shaped the city's reputation. You'll also discover historic cemeteries and learn about the burial traditions that developed in response to local conditions.

New Orleans has deep cultural connections to voodoo, too. A knowledgeable guide can help separate the genuine history and traditions from the sensationalised stories that have accumulated over the years. And when you've had your fill of things that go bump in the night? This is New Orleans, so the answer is simple: eat something delicious, find some live music and enjoy yourself.

The food alone is a very convincing reason to visit.

Why visit?

Few places blend history, culture, atmosphere and entertainment quite like New Orleans. You can spend your morning discovering historic neighbourhoods, your afternoon sampling local specialities and your evening hearing stories that may make your walk back to the hotel a little more interesting.

Make it a bigger adventure: Use New Orleans as the starting point for a Deep South road trip, exploring Louisiana's bayous, smaller historic towns and neighbouring states. This one is ideal if you want your Halloween adventure to include incredible food, brilliant music and a city that has character coming out of every doorway. Just don't book a ghost tour immediately after a large dinner unless you're confident you can keep up.

5. Savannah, Georgia: Southern Charm With a Sinister Side

Beautiful architecture, leafy squares, historic mansions and enormous oak trees draped in Spanish moss. Savannah sounds like the setting for a romantic film.

And it absolutely can be.

But this elegant Georgian city also has a darker side, with centuries of history, tragedy and folklore contributing to its reputation as one of America's most intriguing destinations for ghost hunters. During the day, Savannah is made for wandering. Explore its historic district, browse independent boutiques, admire the architecture and stop for some traditional Southern cooking. Its squares and shaded streets invite you to slow down and soak up the atmosphere.

Then the sun goes down.

Join an evening ghost tour and discover the stories attached to historic inns, grand houses and other locations that have become part of Savannah's supernatural folklore. The contrast is what makes the city so appealing. It's beautiful without being boring, historic without feeling like a museum and atmospheric without needing to manufacture the mood. And if you don't encounter a single ghost? You've still spent time in one of the South's most characterful cities.

Why visit?

Savannah is perfect for travellers who appreciate history, architecture, good food and a little mystery. It's romantic, photogenic and full of stories, making it just as appealing for couples as it is for friends or curious solo travellers.

Make it a bigger adventure: Pair Savannah with Charleston, South Carolina, for a road trip through two of the American South's most atmospheric historic cities. Alternatively, continue towards Florida for a holiday that combines historic charm with sunshine and beaches. By day, you can admire the beautiful surroundings. By night, you can investigate why everyone keeps talking about the haunted house around the corner.

So, Which Spooky American Adventure Is Calling You?

The wonderful thing about travelling around the USA is that you don't have to choose between a fascinating experience and a brilliant holiday. You can have both.

You could spend October exploring Salem's witchcraft history, take a Colorado road trip with an overnight stay at a legendary hotel, discover the stories of Gettysburg or lose yourself in the atmospheric streets of New Orleans and Savannah. And you certainly don't have to travel in October to enjoy these destinations. Their history, culture and character make them worth exploring throughout the year, although seasonal events and Halloween celebrations can make an autumn visit extra special.

The trick is finding the right combination for you.

Perhaps you want a week of historic cities and ghost tours. Maybe you'd prefer a longer road trip with spectacular scenery, boutique hotels and a few unusual overnight stays. Or perhaps you're already thinking about a bigger American adventure that combines the spooky stuff with food, music, national parks or a few days in a completely different destination.
