A Short Autumn Escape to Montenegro

Our 4-Night Break from Birmingham

Claire Calladine on 01 okt 2026

This October I swapped the usual Canary Islands sunshine for somewhere a little different: Montenegro. Nigel and I wanted a short, easy escape with good weather, beautiful scenery and plenty to do, without spending hours on a plane. Montenegro turned out to be the perfect answer.

We flew directly from Birmingham into Tivat Airport, which made the journey wonderfully straightforward. The flight time was around 2 hours 30 minutes, so it really works as a long weekend or short‑break destination, just long enough to feel like you have gone somewhere new, but without the fatigue of a longer flight.
At the beginning of October the weather was lovely: warm enough to sit outside, enjoy a drink by the water and explore comfortably, without being too hot. If you normally think of the Canaries for shoulder‑season sun, Montenegro is a fantastic alternative, with dramatic mountains, fjord‑like bays and atmospheric old towns.

Montenegro has two key international gateways.
Tivat Airport is where we flew into. It is a small, no‑fuss airport close to the Bay of Kotor and the main coastal resorts. Baggage reclaim and arrivals were quick and simple, and we were outside in the fresh air in no time. For coastal stays in places like Tivat, Kotor or Budva, Tivat is wonderfully convenient.
It is a little different for the flight home, so it did take some time as it's such a small airport.  Overtime, I think this will change as tourism is growing in Montenegro.

Located near the capital city, Podgorica is Montenegro’s other main international airport. It tends to work better if you are planning to explore the inland regions and national parks, or if the flight schedules from your preferred UK airport happen to be better into Podgorica. Transfer times to the coast are longer, but it can suit a trip that combines mountains, lakes and the seaside.

The drive from the airport to the coast is immediately impressive: mountains rising sharply from the sea, pretty harbours and that deep blue of the Adriatic. It felt instantly different from more familiar Mediterranean resorts, but still very relaxed and welcoming.
For our base, we chose SIRO Porto Montenegro, set close to the marina. It was a fantastic spot for a short break: everything felt within easy reach, from the waterfront promenade to cafés, bars and restaurants.

Being so close to the marina meant we could wander out in the evening, watch the yachts and soak up the atmosphere before deciding where to eat. It had that lovely mix of stylish, modern surroundings with a relaxed, holiday feel.

Food & drink highlights - from fresh fish to Bangkok street food

One of the nicest parts of the trip was the contrast in dining experiences, all within walking distance.
We enjoyed a great fish restaurant, perfect for trying fresh local seafood with views of the water. It felt very “Montenegro”, with that Adriatic coastal flavour and an unhurried pace.
On another evening we found a Bangkok‑style street food restaurant, which felt wonderfully authentic. We ended up relaxing outside, eating out of boxes, just as you would at a real street stall, and it was such a fun, informal way to end the day.
Those little moments, from leisurely seafood dinners to casual street food, really added to the sense of being away without any stress or formality.

 Cheers, celebrating my birthday

Plenty to see and do on a short break

Although we only stayed for four nights, there was a surprising amount to do in and around the Bay of Kotor. You could easily fill every day with activities, or, like us, strike a balance between exploring and switching off.

Some ideas I would suggest considering:

Wandering the Old Town of Kotor with its narrow streets, stone buildings and lively squares
Enjoying leisurely meals and drinks by the water, watching the boats come and go
Taking a boat trip on the Bay of Kotor, visiting tiny island churches and waterfront villages
Visiting nearby coastal towns such as Perast, Budva and Sveti Stefan for different views and atmospheres

Our standout experiences: were the Kotor cable car and alpine rollercoaster.
Taking the cable car up from the bay gives you spectacular views over Kotor, the water and the surrounding mountains. It is one of those journeys where you find yourself constantly reaching for your camera as the panorama opens up. At the top there are viewing points and places to pause, soak in the scenery and breathe in that clear mountain air.  We also tried an alpine‑style rollercoaster in the hills. It is a fun, slightly adrenaline‑fuelled way to enjoy the landscape, with tracks that weave through the greenery and views unfolding around you as you go. It added a playful twist to the trip and made a great contrast to the more traditional sightseeing.
These two activities together gave us a real sense of Montenegro’s character: rugged, dramatic and beautiful, yet very accessible even on a short break.

As much as we enjoyed getting out and about, a big part of the charm of this holiday was simply slowing down. Between activities we made plenty of time to, sit by the water with a coffee or a glass of local wine, and stroll along the waterfront promenades and marinas.
Of course I found time to train everyday, the hotel had an amazing gym and what I enmjoy when I go somwehere new is to run and exlpore, which of course I made the most of.
It felt like just the right balance: enough to keep us interested and inspired, but with lots of space to rest.

Why I would recommend Montenegro for a 4-night escape

Having experienced it first‑hand, I would happily recommend Montenegro as;

A refreshing alternative to the Canary Islands for early or late season sun

A short, easy escape from the UK, with manageable flight times from regional airports like Birmingham
A destination where you can combine scenic adventures (think cable cars and mountain views) with relaxed coastal downtime
Somewhere that feels a little more off the beaten track, while still offering comfort, hospitality and beautiful places to stay

If reading about my own trip has sparked some ideas, I would love to help you plan your own Montenegro escape.  Whether it's a simple 4‑night break like ours, or a longer adventure combining the coast, mountains and lakes.
